EARLY KNOX COUNTY CHURCHES
Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee (1887)
CATHOLIC
The church of the Immaculate Conception, Roman Catholic, was established in Knoxville in 1851, and from that time until 1855 was under the care of Rev. Father H.V. BROWN. The first church building was erected soon after the organization, on Walnut Street near Vine. It was used until 1886, when the present fine brick was completed. The congregation now numbers over 1,000 members, and a Sunday-school is maintained with an attendance of about 300. The successors of Father BROWN have been:
- J.L. BIEMANS, March, 1855, to October 24, 1857;
- J. BERGRATH, October, 1857 to May, 1865;
- A.J. RYAN, May, 1865 to June, 1867;
- Joseph S. KEANE for one year from June, 1867
- M.J. FINNEGAN from June, 1867 to July, 1872.
Since the latter date the church has been under the care of Rev. Francis Thomas MARRON.
