1951-1962:
The Leveling-Off of the Church

Everything was becoming modern in 1951.  In February of this year, the first power lawn mower was purchased.  A religious ad was also placed in the News-Sentinel.

The church incorporated and authorized the issue of one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars in bonds to finance the new building program.

Lauren Sprunger was the church's first Associate Pastor.  He also served as Minister of Education, and for a period of time as the Minister of Music.  He remained at the church from 1953 to 1956.

The church voted on March 10, 1954, to hire a maid for three days a week at five dollars a day to help care for the new building.

On February 9, 1955, the neon sign was removed from the front of the church.  A brick encasement was built between the old sanctuary, and the new one being built for the purpose of sermon topics, etc.  The church secured some new letterhead with the slogan "The Church with a Heart -- in the Heart of Burlington."

Four thousand dollars was borrowed on October 5, 1955, to enlarge the Timothy Street Mission, which had outgrown its original building.

In December of 1955, the church hired its second full-time secretary.  In December of 1956, three years after the building program began, the new building was dedicated.  A very grateful group of people it was that walked into the beautiful sanctuary on that December morning.  I have been told it was an experience never to be forgotten.

Although it was February of 1958, not very warm weather, the people were looking ahead to the summer months and making preparations to stay cool.  The vote was taken to install air conditioning, the cost not to exceed eleven thousand dollars.

The policy was adopted on November 5, 1958, that all announcements would be made at the beginning of the service.  In December of 1958, Kenneth Wallace was elected to be the first "church announcer."

Reverend A. C. Walker was pastor from 1959 until 1962.  He was often referred to as an evangelist -- this was the type of preaching he did.  This pastor could also sing.  Many times he would sing before he preached.  The people received an extra blessing when he did this, for he had a beautiful voice with tremendous volume.

An incident happened in the church in 1959 that had not happened since 1920.  On November 4, 1959, the church withdrew fellowship from R. E. Cagle.  This man attended McCalla Avenue for a period of time and then began serving as pastor of Timothy Street Mission.  It seems that he forgot the commandmant [sic] concerning adultry [sic].  He became involved with another woman, left his wife and children, and went off to Texas.  The church did grant letters to Miss Gloria, Danny, and Robert Cagle.

Reverend Fred Boehmer was called as Minister of Education on December 13, 1959.  He thought everyone should have a job in the church and really work at it.  He created enough interest in the education program that he had no trouble getting the people to fill the positions.  Boehmer was a very versatile man.  He served as the Minister of Music during the period that the church was without one and he also served as Associate Pastor.

The Timothy Street Mission became a church on May 11, 1960.  McCalla Avenue donated the baptistry from the old sanctuary to them.

In February of [19]61, the new education building was started.  At present this building contains the church offices, fellowship hall and two Sunday School departments with adjoining classrooms.

Reverend Raymond Smith was pastor from 1962 to 1968.  Reverend Smith was a bible scholar.   He could tell you exactly where to find the scripture you would need to answer any question.  He was also good in the field of counciling [sic], an easy person to talk with.
