Statement of Consideration
in View of the Possibility
of Negroes Desiring to Attend
Our Worship Services

The Committee concerning the admitting of Negroes to our church services met September 3, 1964.  After much discussion varying from a frank denial of admission to the possibility of seating them, the following suggestions were agreed upon.

1. Since McCalla Avenue Baptist Church is an autonomous body, every member is important, none must ever be hurt and all must be helped to be true followers of Christ.  Therefore, whatever decision we reach must be with this conviction in mind.

2. We believe that it is wise to have, at this stage of things, an indefinite policy with reference to seating Negroes in our congregation.  It seems wise not to create a policy of finality until the occasion arises that demands such as expediency.  Our reasoning is that we might be inviting commotion without, as well as disturbance within the church.

3. The ushers are to be instructed to talk pleasantly and courteously to any who desire to attend the services.  They are to explain that the church has not adopted a final policy and requested them to permit the pastor, or a church leader to explain our problems to them at a convenient time.  If it is evident that they are coming for integration and not to worship, then the usher will deny them the privilege to be seated.

4. It is our believe [sic] that if the Negro comes to worship they will understand our problem and will not ask for admission and thus possibly disturb the worship of others.  If they will not listen to reason it will be evident that they are not there to worship.  In that case the usher will be fully justified in asking them to leave.

5. In the event that the problem presents itself, following a consultation with the individual or individuals who may have presented themselves for the worship service, the pastor, at his discretion, will present the matter to the church for action through the usual channels.
