MT. PLEASANT CEMETERY
(Lyons View Road)

Compiled and contributed by David Donahue

This cemetery is located at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, a small stone church on Lyons View Drive which serves a black congregation. A plaque on the building reads:

Rebuilt 1943
J. G. Nance
G. W. Wesley
A. H. Smith
Wm. Barton
Wm. Buchanan
Deacons
Rev. D. C. Cole Pastor

Some of these family names also appear in the cemetery adjoining the church. The cemetery is no longer used (the last burial was in 1971) and is in poor condition. Maintenance is limited to grass cutting. Many graves are sunken. About 25 percent of the area along the south side has been allowed to revert to brush. In the summer it is almost impossible to see the markers within this area. Probably only about 30 percent of all graves here have readable markers. This cemetery was recorded March 25, 1989, and checked on September 23, 1989. Rechecked January 19, 1997.
