MIDDLEBROOK CEMETERY
(Middlebrook Pike)

Compiled and contributed by David Donahue

This cemetery is located on the north side of Middlebrook Pike between Liberty Street and I-640. The record below was made initially September 16, 1989 and February 10, 1990. At that time the cemetery was overgrown and was being invaded by kudzu from the north. The only areas being maintained were the southwestern edge where an adjacent property owner was cutting the weeds to reduce weed encroachment onto his own property and a small area near the northeast corner surrounding Weaver family markers. The cemetery was revisited in January 1997 after the brush and kudzu had been cleared, probably with jail labor. Some fallen markers had been reerected. Most known markers not found in 1989-1990 were found in a cleared cemetery in 1997.

In 1990, a nearby resident says that the cemetery once belonged to the Holston Methodist Conference. The property was transferred by quick claim deed to Lee Weaver who sold plots and performed some maintenance until his death around 1980. The cemetery had been maintained only sporadically since.

There are three earlier records for the cemetery. One is a compilation by Carl A. "Cal" McIntire IV dated August 1978. It was compiled as a scout project by Troop 147 of West Hills Baptist Church, Knoxville, Tennessee, and is available as an unpublished manuscript in the McClung Collection of the Knox County Public Library. The troop cleared the cemetery, laid out a grid system, and recorded the graves by grid location. Anyone with a need to find a particular grave should consult this excellent work. McIntire noted 46 graves marked only by fieldstones or marble slabs. In the listing that follows, names from this manuscript are noted as being from McIntire.

Another was compiled by Karen Shultz as a high school history project in 1974. It is contained in a manuscript titled Knox Co. Tenn. Cemetery Inscriptions by the history students of Mr. Snyder Roberts, Clinton High School, Clinton, Tennessee. The manuscript is available in the McClung Collection of the Knox County Public Library. The Shultz manuscript has several major transcription errors and often uses initials for names spelled out on the markers, both of which make the manuscript a bit suspect. However, names listed by Shultz not found in 1989/1990 and not listed by McIntire are included below. Names from this manuscript are noted as being from Shultz.

The oldest record was made by Mrs. H. C. Amick on December 2, 1960. It appears as "Keith Street Cemetery" in Knox County Cemetery Records" Vol. II, a manuscript compiled by the Admiral Drivd Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The manuscript is available in the McClung Collection of the Knox County Public Library. Amick noted 69 unmarked graves. Names from this manuscript are noted as being from Amick.
