KNOTT CEMETERY
Compiled and contributed by David Donahue
This cemetery is located on Knott Avenue at Frank Street, two blocks west of Liberty Street and opposite Grove Heights Baptist Church. It is fenced with a locked gate. A plaque on the entry gate pillar reads "In Memory of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd R. Knott." In 1989 the cemetery was privately maintained, and the maintenance was excellent. The grass was cut frequently, weeds were kept cut, and any fallen markers had been righted. I am told that the cemetery had been restored to this condition from an overgrown, vandalized state.
This cemetery was transcribed about 1938 by W. J. Stratum and J. H. Lynn as part of the Historical Records Project under the Works Progress Administration. The transcription is included in Tombstone Records of Knox County, a manuscript available in the McClung Collection of the Knox County Library, Knoxville, Tennessee. Reference to the earlier transcription is made where appropriate. This 1938 record notes that the cemetery was established about 1868 on land donated by John L. Johnson, the father of Mrs. W. L. Watt.
This cemetery was recorded September 16, 1989.

The transcription of 1938 notes 30 graves with unmarked marble slabs, 2 graves with unmarked wooden slabs, and 10 unmarked graves. About 12 of these have since been marked. A long time nearby resident recalls that at one time there were five Whaley graves in the yard just east of the cemetery at about where the present cemetery fence on the eastern side is offset at meeting the old fence line. The resident recalls that the fieldstone markers disappeared after the property changed hands. There is no evidence of these graves now.
