CRESTVIEW CEMETERY
(Parts 1-4)

Compiled and contributed by David Donahue

Cemetery is the largest black cemetery in Knox County. It was established as a perpetual care cemetery in the 1920. It seems like this was a really nice cemetery from its founding into the 1960s. But its perpetual care fund was grossly underfunded, and the cemetery fell onto hard times. By the 1970s large parts of the cemetery seem to have had come under the control of a local black funeral home which buried massive numbers of people here, apparently without making contributions to the perpetual care fund. In the worst areas in the eastern section of the cemetery it was just pile of dirt, sunken grave, pile of dirt, sunken grave, one after the other, with no attempt even to restore a flat surface. When the last cemetery manager died, all maintenance ceased. In 1990 most of the cemetery except "the Circle" was overgrown. There was a public outcry and investigation into the cemetery in the mid-1990s. [The perpetual care fund actually was intact but only had $10,000.] Prison/jail labor was used to clear the cemetery beginning about 1995 or 1996.

Layout of Crestview Cemetery. Numbers refer to the order in which
the cemetery was recorded and have nothing to do with
any section numbering scheme used by the cemetery.

Part 1, Upper Loop
Part 2, Far North
Part 3, "The Circle"
Part 4, East Side

Part 1, Upper Loop

Recorded February 11, February 18, 1990; checked and updated February 2, 1997. At far northwest but connected by drive with lower part of Crestview Cemetery. Although I have been told that is the northernmost part of Longview Cemetery, the drives and the fact that it is far less overgrown than most of Longview makes me think it is part of Crestview, and it is treated here as such. The view from here on a clear day is one of the best in Knoxville.

Part 3, "The Circle"

The section of the cemetery known as "The Circle" was the most fashionable part of the cemetery before the cemetery's troubles began, and it is the only part of the cemetery where you get some sense of family. Families here generally kept this section clear of vegetation after cemetery maintenance ceased, and it is one of only two sections of the cemetery which escaped the massive increase in number of burials in the 1970s which turned much of the cemetery into a potter's field. Recorded April 8, April 15, 1990; checked April 22, 1990; updated January 25, 1997.
