WESLEY J. HICKS, Esq.

Many preachers in the Holston Conference, and a large circle of friends, have been made sad by the recent death of this most excellent Christian gentleman. As a Christian, an officer of the Church, and a professional man, he was greatly esteemed; for in all these relations he was without reproach. He was born in Monroe Co., Tenn., Sept., 1826, and died in Knoxville, March 31, 1876. His mother was a woman of sound judgment and deep piety, and trained her children in the fear of the Lord. At the early age of eight years he joined the Methodist Church, and remained a member till death. After graduating at Iliwasee College, he read law, under Judge Brown, at Madisonville, in his native county, and afterward became a partner with the Judge in the practice of law at Knoxville. He had what the profession call a "legal mind" - that is, a natural talent for the law, and this was manifest in his practice, and in the production of a Manual on Chancery Practice which has become a standard authority. June 21, 1875, he was united in marriage with Miss Lizzie Cornick, daughter of Tully R. Cornick, Esq., with whom he lived in the bonds of love till his death. Mr. Hicks was a sincere friend, a kind and tender-hearted husband, and charitable Christian. His last hours were peaceful, and he left a comfortable assurance that he has gone to rest with God. He was one of the most sincere, conscientious men I ever knew. The profession to which he belonged regarded him as a faithful and incorruptible man. He was an active steward in Church Street M.E. Church, South, Knoxville, and among the most liberal contributors in the congregation. He will be greatly missed in the Church, especially by the young men of Church Street, with whom he labored most efficiently in their Mission-work.
