Woman's Missionary Union
1913-1971

The first organization of the Woman's Missionary Union of McCalla Avenue Baptist Church was organized in 1913, the same year the church was organized, and was called Ladies Aide.  Ladies Aide soon became known as Woman's Missionary Society.

The first president was Mrs. M. L. Galyon, the second was Mrs. George Eden, and the third Mrs. H. B. Woodward.  Mrs. Woodward often visualized, as did many others, a new church building on the lots where the church now stands.  As she passed by she would breathe a prayer that this [d]ream might come true.  Mrs. George Eden used her influence to bring this dream to a reality.  Miss Nannie Miles gave the first contribution toward the purchase of the lots.

During the presidency of Mrs. A. G. Akans the Woman's Missionary Society was divided into circles.  One of the circles was named for Miss Miles and one in memory of Miss Olive Eden our missionary to Africa.  The Young Woman's Auxil[i]ary and Sunbeam Band were organized later, as was the Girls' Auxil[i]ary.

We have had many presidents since the beginning of this organization.  The names of the people who have had this position are as follows:  Mrs. M. L. Galyon, Mrs. George Eden, Mrs H. B. Woodward, Mrs. A. G. Akans, Mrs. W. L. Waters, Mrs. Charles Lyle, Mrs. A. M. Long, Mrs. Cora Powers, Mrs. H. E. Evans, Mrs. Luther Pennington, Mrs. T. W. Fulton, Mrs. Ira McCallister, Mrs. T. C. Wyatt, Mrs. H. L. Williams (4 years), Mrs. Henry Miller, Mrs. William Mann, Mrs. L. H. Waring, Mrs. Elmer Heatherly, Mrs. John Bailey, Mrs. E. A. Wells, Mrs. H. R. Martin, Mrs. Kenneth Pratt, Mrs. Kenneth Wyrick, Mrs. Floyd Johnson (5 years), Mrs. Neal Corum, Mrs. Bill H. Cruze, Mrs. W. M. Moulton Jr., Mrs. John Gravender, Mrs. Lloyd Strange, Mrs. J. E. Bruchfield [sic - Burchfield], Mrs. John Jack, Mrs. W. J. Laugherty, Mrs. Herman Lay, and Mrs. J. C. Rollins.

The Woman's Missionary Union was reorganized beginning October, 1968.  Mrs. J. W. Parker was elected as Director, and the name was changed to Baptist Women.  The names of the age level organizations were also changed to Acteens, Girls in Action, and Mission Friends.

This year, 1971, we have fourteen Directors and Leaders teaching missions to the above- mentioned groups.  These leaders are:  Mrs. J. W. Parker, Mrs. J. C. Rollins, Mrs. Herman Fox, Mrs. Robert Rudder, Mrs. Jerry Kooch, Mrs. Woman Wright, Mrs. Howard Schaefer, Mrs. Joe Tarwater, Mrs. Mike McBride, Mrs. Paul Hancock, Mrs. J. T. Hickman, Mrs. Larry Bowers, Mrs. Steve Beeler, Mrs. Randall Holbrook.

We have had a glimpse of the past and present and thank God for his blessings.  It is the desire of the Woman's Missionary Union to accept and carry out the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20.
