Historical Sketch

The Fourth Presbyterian Church, of Knoxville, was organized April 25th, 1886, with eighteen members, out of a congregation which had been holding services for some time, in the Edgewood Schoolhouse.

The first church building was erected on the corner of Luttrell St. and Glenwood Avenue, and the first service in it was on November 7th, 1886, the building was not dedicated, however, until November 6th, 1887.

The first pastor,  Rev. E. A. Elmore, D.D., began his ministry November 7th, 1886, and did a most important work, in building up, organizing and securing for the church a high measure of efficiency.  He closed his labors here February 11th, 1900, having accepted a call to the Second Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, Tenn.  He died May 10, 1927.  This congregation has placed a memorial tablet in our church auditorium.

The second pastor, Rev. John M. Richmond, D.D., was called November 18th, 1900, began his labors January 6th, 1901, and was installed March 31st, 1901.  After almost nine years of faithful service he tendered his resignation, to become effective July 31st, 1910, and the relationship was dissolved by Presbytery in September following.

The third pastor, Joseph P. Calhoun, D.D., was called December 18th, 1910, began his ministry in April, 1911, and was installed May 14th, 1911.

Early in his ministry, Dr. Calhoun espoused  the cause of a more commodious church building, with improved facilities for all church activities and steadfastly adhered thereto, until he gained the consent and co-operation [sic] of all members of the congregation, resulting in the erection of our present church building, on the corner of Glenwood and Broadway, the largest and most successful financial undertaking of this congregation.  He closed his ministry July 8, 1917.  Accepted a pastorate in Winterhaven, Fla.

The fourth, our present pastor, Rev. John S. Eakin, D.D., was called in November, 1917, and began his ministry on the first Sabbath in January, 1918, and was installed in March following.
