HENRY LONAS CEMETERY
(Lonas and Crawford Cemetery)

Compiled and contributed by David Donahue

This is a private family cemetery located on Fillmore Avenue. It has a high fence with a gate which is kept locked to prevent vandalism. The cemetery, though no longer used, is well maintained. The family has erected a marker in the cemetery which can be read from the street. The last burial here was in 1920. The cemetery probably is full.

HENRY LONAS CEMETERY

HENRY LONAS (born Sept. 4, 1765; died July 27, 1848) established this cemetery in 1813... He was owner of a large tract of land nearby and a patriot of the American Revolution... He was husband of Sebella Helsley and later Elizabeth Yoast, both buried here... In his will he described this plot as being planted with Apple Trees... Buried here also are family members who fought in the War of 1812.

In GRATEFUL MEMORY OF Henry Lonas, this marker was erected by his many descendants.

This cemetery was recorded for the Historical Records Project in the 1930s under the name "Lonas and Crawford Cemetery." The transcription appears in "Tombstone Records of Knox County," an unpublished manuscript available at the McClung Collection, Knox County Public Library, Knoxville, Tennessee. A partial record was made by a P. J. McCarter, probably in the early 1960s. It appears under the name "Lonas (Private) in Filmore Street" in "Miscellaneous Knox County Tombstone Inscriptions," an unpublished manuscript available at the McClung Collection, Knox County Public Library, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Because the cemetery is not accessible without permission, the information below is based on the Historical Records Project (referred to below as HRP transcription). Some additional people and information concerning double markers comes from McCarter.
