I have copies of excerpts from it and all it mentions was that he did go to war, and his brothers and sisters were teachers in knox county, and there is a library in Maryville, Tennessee? built on the spot where he was born. Please contact me; I would love
to discuss him with you. I have not been able to link him to my family (yet).

Taylor in Knox County, TN

Surname: Taylor Campbell

John, here's a wild shot in the dark. I am researching my Daugthers Taylor line from Sharp and Independence County, ARK. Have tracked backed to Elijah and Sarah Taylor who lived in Knox County, TN from before 1830 to 1860 Census (have not checked further). Somewhat mysterious since census' indicate Elijah was born in CANADA in 1785 and Sarah born in IRELAND in 1786. Sort of unusual to end up in TENN. Elijah's son Stephen,b: 1823 in TN married Elizabeth Campbell in Knox County, TN Jan. 25, 1849 and promptly moved to Lawrence County (became Sharp County) ARK. Since Dad and Mom stayed, likely other extended family. Some indication family was in Sullivan County, TN in 1810 since tax list there lists an Elijah Taylor and a Stephen Taylor (speculate Stephen was Elijah's Dad) Taylor is common name but not that many in early Knox County, so thought there might be a connection. In addition, you mentioned rumor of Doctor in family and it has been my experience that medical occupations tend to run in FAmilies. Stephen was a farmer. Don't know what Elijah's occupation was, but several of Stephens grandsons on Ark became Doctors. Any of this ring a bell?

MILLIGAN

I am trying to locate a death certificate or probate papers for Bart MILLIGAN, who died 4 October 1907, "at his home on Phillips street beyond the western limits of the city [Knoxville]." In the Knoxville Tribune of October 5, 1907, an article was printed indicating that Bart was the oldest citizen of Knox County, allegedly 103. (Per 1900census records, he was only 83 then, and earlier census record sindicate his age at about 83 at his death.) The article mentioned that the funeral arrangements had not been completed. I am very interested in finding out if there were any local records about Bart. Nashville indicates that there was no death certificate filed there.

Searching for info on Thomas REESE/REECE. He married Elizabeth CORNETT 1906-1911. They had 2 children, Cloramae (abt. 1911), Flora(1912). Around 1912-1915, he got a job in Knoxville. Supposedly he was murdered after working one week. Two of his friends told Lizzie he was murdered for his pay check. When she mentioned going to claim the body they told her he was already buried. We are trying to find out what really happened to Thomas. Did his friends murder him and hide the body? Was he really murdered and the authorities never notified Lizzie officially or send the body home for burial? Or did he simply leave his wife and children? Any information will be appreciated. Thomas was born in Georgia about 1886 according to the1910 Tennessee census.

Brady Mayfield and [son?] William C. Mayfield of Knoxville, TN

Posted by Rev. Dr. Doug Showalter <dougshow@cape.com> on Wed, 21 Jul 1999

Surname: Mayfield, Wolf, Cheatham, Price, Kennedy, Courtenay, Cruze, Davis, Sands, Rochester, Maranville, Milligan, Wilcox, Owens, Johnston, Tunnel

More on BRADY MAYFIELD of early Knoxville, TN, and [his son?] WILLIAM C. MAYFIELD. Does anyone have information on them and their families? Brady has been especially difficult to trace. Here are potential pieces of the puzzle which I've found so far:

1770-1780 Brady Mayfield was born [SC?]
1780-1784 Brady's wife was born [SC?]

1810 Pendleton Co., SC census [roll #61, p. 159] shows Brady Mayfield family with four girls under 10 and one boy 10-15. Other Mayfields in that county's census were: Abraham, Austin, Bryant, Edmond, Samuel, and Shuger [Ezekiel?].

1820 Brady Mayfield family does not appear in any Federal Census.
1820 Pendleton Co., SC census shows these Mayfield families: Abram, Archibald, Briant, Elijah, Samuel.
1820 Knox Co., TN census is lost.

1821-1822 Brady Mayfield appears in County Court records of Knox Co., TN, apparently as the defendant, who is found not guilty by a jury. Plaintiff is ANDREW LEABOTT. Other names are hard to read: LINDSEY WRIGHT, S?ITINY O?NBUY, and JANE L?OND who was allowed to give a deposition in Hawkins Co., TN. [January 5, 1821 and July 1-2, 1822]

1823 Horman Mayfield [a son?] held in Knox County jail. [Acts of TN 1796-1830]
1823 Brady Mayfield [possibly a different one or a son] signed a position, probably in Bedford Co., TN, with REUBEN MAYFIELD regarding the Rutherford and Bedford county line.

1824 MINERVA MAYFIELD [a daughter?] and CALVIN WOLF were married in Knox Co., TN [September 16]

1825 Brady Mayfield served as a bondsmen for the marriage of MALINDA MAYFIELD [a daughter?] to GEORGE CHEATHAM in Knox Co., TN. [April 7]
1825 MARIA MAYFIELD [a daughter?] and THOMAS PRICE were married in Knox. Co., TN. [November 17]

1830 Knox Co., TN census [roll #178, p. 315] shows Brady Mayfield family with one girl 10-15, two girls 15-20, one girl 20-30, one boy under 5, and one boy 5-10. There are no other Mayfields in this county's 1830 census.
1830 St. Clair Co., IL census show a Brady Mayfield family [a son?].

1834 MAHALA MAYFIELD [a daugher?] and JAMES PRICE were married in Knox Co. They named one son WILLIAM C. [March 8]

1840 Knox Co., TN census shows no Mayfields.

1850 Knox Co. TN census shows no Mayfields.
1850 Blount Co., TN census [adjacent to Knox Co.] shows a William C. Mayfield (age 24) living in the household with ARTHUR KENNEDY (age 24), his wife SARAH (age 21) and their daughter HESTER (age 1). [Was this William C. and the son of Brady?]

1854 WILLIAM MAYFIELD married MARGARET COURTENAY in Knox Co., TN. [January 4] The bondsman was George Cheatham. [Is this a first marriage of William C. Mayfield who married Sarah Cruze?]

1860 Knox Co., TN census shows no Mayfields.

1861 WILLIAM C. MAYFIELD married SARAH CRUZE in Knox. Co., TN. [September 12] William was born about 1826 in TN; his parents were born in SC. William and Sarah named their first child: Robert Brady Mayfield. [Sarah's father was ROBERT CREWS. Her mother was MARY ANN BURNHAM.]]

William and Sarah's children were:

--ROBERT BRADY MAYFIELD born about 1862 in Knoxville, who married MAGNOLIA DAVIS of Blount Co., TN, in Knox Co., 1886 [my line is traced through this couple]

--MARY L. J. MAYFIELD born about 1864, who married WESLEY SANDS in Knox Co., 1892

--LUCINDA J. MAYFIELD born about 1867, who married WILLIAM D. ROCHESTER in Knoxville, 1889

--JAMES HARVEY MAYFIELD born 30 September 1870 in Knox Co., who married MARY LEONA MARANVILLE in Knox Co., 1893

--NANCY MAYFIELD born August 1870 in Knox Co., who married WILLIAM R. MILLIGAN in Knox Co., 1890

--JOHN LAMAR(?) MAYFIELD born 16 September 1872 in Knoxville, who married GALENA H. WILCOX

--WILLIAM A. MAYFIELD born July 1875 in Knox Co., who married LOTTIE OWENS in Knox Co., 1896

--JOSEPHINE MAYFIELD born about 1878, who married ROBERT JOHNSTON

--SARAH E. MAYFIELD born August 1880, who married ____ TUNNEL.

1880 Knox Co. TN census shows William Mayfield and his family.

++++++++++
Although unsubstantiated thus far, one Mayfield researcher thought it very likely, based on Brady's 1810 SC location, that he was the grandson of ROBERT MAYFIELD [wife: SARAH] who was born about 1732 in Spottsylvania Co., VA and died about 1817 in Chester District SC.

Robert is said to have had children: Elisha, Abraham, Edmond, Ezekiel [Sugar], Allen, Obediah, Stephen, and Jonathan. The researcher noted that about the time Brady was born, some of Robert's children, such as Edmond, had sons whose names are unknown.

Robert himself is said to be the son of ABRAHAM MAYFIELD [wife: ELIZABETH] who was born about 1681 in Essex Co., VA and died 1778 in Granville Co., NC. Abraham himself is said to have been the son of ROBERT MAYFIELD [wife: SARAH] who was born about 1635/45 possibly in Gloucester Co., VA, and died 3 December 1714 in Essex Co., VA. Most say this Mayfield line came from England; others have suggested Germany.

I welcome any help in tracing Brady, William C., and their families. Thanks.

Doug Showalter

BURNHAM FAMILY

Posted by Don Sheridan <Don_Sheridan@proffitts.com> on Mon, 19 Jul 1999

Surname: BURNHAM, CRUZE, FORD

Dennis,
Made some discoveries on the Burnhams this weekend. Mary Ann Burnham in the 1880 census states that he father was born in England and that she was born in Virginia. Also, their was a Hezekiah Burnham who married in Knox but shows up in the Vigo Co., IN census of 1830, as well as a Oron (Aaron?) Burnham and a Gurdin Burnham. Gurdin Burnham is in his 70s at the time of the 1830 census and in all probability is the father of Hezekiah and probably Sally and Mary Ann. If Sally was born in England about 1800 and Mary Ann was born in Virginia about 1804 they must have come to America between those two dates.
Are you related to the Fords of Knox Co.? My great-great-great grandmother was Martha Ford who married Daniel Murphy. Her father was Elisha Ford, Jr. He came to Tennessee from Virginia about 1838.
Let me hear from you.

On the Knox Co Map there is a section called Maloneyville going way out Washington Pike. The road called Maloneyville Road intersects with County Hospital Road and there is mention of a section called Potters Field.

Does anyone know where I should look for more information.

Burnham family of Knox Co., TN

Posted by Dennis Lancaster <dlancaster@voyager.net> on Fri, 16 Jul 1999

Surname: HOOD, WRINKLE, BURNHAM, BAKER, FORD

Hello Don. It is nice to hear from you. I have very little information on the Burnham family that married into the HOOD family. What I have is the name and a picture of Sally Burnham. She was married to Andrew HOOD on 10 May 1823 in Knox Co., TN. It is reported that she was born in England and I would approximate her birth date to be 1800. That would have made her 23 years old at the time of her marriage. The back of the photo states "She was the heir to the Birmingham England estate." Now that has not been varified by me as of yet. I am sorry that I could not be of much help. If you do come across any more information on this family from Knox Co., TN I would be ever so grateful.

Surname: CREWS, CRUZE, MAYFIELD

Hi Doug,
It's been along time since we communicated. How is your research going? Glad to see your on line.
I'm still plugging away on the Cruze line in Knox County and would like to up date the Mayfield side with your line, i.e. children, marriages, births, ect.
Thought you might want to know James H. Mayfield passed away last December. I talked to him about a month before he died and he said his daughter, Cheryl Hawkins, had done some work on the Mayfields but I don't know how to get a hold of her she has an unlisted number. We might try going through her brother Kenneth who lives in Powell. Who else have you contacted here.
I've had several people who think that James Crews, Sarah Cruze Mayfields grandfather, was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to American with his father Walter (if Walter is indeed his father, here again we don't have any hard proof just speculation).
Let me know if you get any replies to your querie I've been in contact with Crews/Cruze desecendants in Florida, Oregon, California and Washington state.
Good to be back in contact with you.

5 Generation's DUNN Builders/Contractors>VA>TN; Knox Co.

Posted by Kathy Roberson <NdnGaGrl02@aol.com> on Thu, 15 Jul 1999

Surname: Dunn, Ford, Loggins, McDowell, Mohorn, Parker, Patrick, Rowland, Tallent, Talley, Wanamaker, Watson, Webb, Wilson, Wimpee

THANK YOU for the information on James C. DUNN (and family) of Knox Co., TN! I just stumbled across it and I'm so glad that I did! Since your info has assisted me so much, I have some information for YOU now! :) 5 Generations of DUNN men who were builders/contractors in the Knoxville, TN, and surrounding areas. Email me for additional family info if needed! Get ready..here we go..

Gen 1 -
William Dunn came to the United States from Bristol, England in a vessel named the "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. He was about 14 yrs. old; (approx. 1765).

William Dunn settled in Virginia. For some time he operated a stage coach between Washington and Richmond. He enlisted in Captain Fairfax's(?) Virginia Company for the duration of the Revolutionary War. Captured by the British, he was given the option of serving with the British troops in this country or taking a chance on one of the British prison ships at Charleston, SC. He served with the British troops until the opportunity came to escape and rejoin his old command. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, following which he was in charge of a large number of British prisoners who were sent over to Conyers (?). Later, William Dunn became a builder. (?'s mean some info unreadable)

Gen 2 - son of William DUNN (and migration to TN)

Thomas Dunn was a builder like his father, William Dunn. He was also known to be designer and carpenter since there were no architects in this time period.
From Virginia, he came to Tennessee and located in the fork of the Holston and French Broad (?) rivers. Later, he moved to the town of Knoxville. There he built the Hagen paper mill, west of Knoxville actually, in the Middlebrook Pike.

Gen 3 - son of Thomas DUNN

A home built by James C. Dunn still stands at the South west corner of West 5th Avenue and Jacksboro Street. James M. Dunn was born in this home as well as another architect by the name of Albert Baumann. The home prior to this which was occupied by the James C. Dunn family has now the Lawson McGhee Library standing upon its foundations. James C. Dunn also built a warehouse in Decatur, Alabama. The timbers used were cut around Knoxville, sawed and pressed here, then shipped by flat boats to Decatur.

In the records of his grandfather Dr. Fouche (?), Mr. W. B. Brownlow, realtor, recently found memorandum of a gift of $50.00 to James C. Dunn for "faithful service" in connection with the building of the Fouche home which was erected upon the site of Marvis (?) Mortuary. James C. Dunn also built the old 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Gay and Union (Miller's store) which was occupied many years by a book store and printing shop owned by W.J. Ramage. When the demolition of the structure began, Mr. James M. Dunn purchased the brackets around the cornice (?) work and used them to decorate his own home at 1424 Armstrong Ave.

Gen 4 - son of James C. DUNN

James M. Dunn, son of James C. Dunn was a builder like the fathers before him. He built 5 homes in Knoxville, TN.
He learned the carpenters trade at age 14.
Upon the taking of this information (1927), James had been engaged in the contracting business for 51 years, having built some of the finest residences, business houses, and public buildings and factories in Tennessee as well as adjoining states. In 1920-21, he took his son
(Gen 5)Oscar Dunn as a business partner which creates quite a long line of family builders.
James' proudest possessions are carpenters tools which belonged to his grandfather. These include a plane and saw which are 150 years old or older.

Mayfield line including Brady

Surname: Mayfield, Cruze, Davis, Baker, Armstrong, O'Bryan

I am seeking information on my Mayfield line. Unless noted otherwise, all events below took place in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.

WILLIAM C. MAYFIELD married SARAH ANN CRUZE 12 Sept 1861. She may have been his second wife. William's father may have been a BRADY MAYFIELD originally from (Pendleton Co.?) South Carolina. Sarah was the daughter of ROBERT CRUZE/CREWS, and she lived in the Vestal section of Knox Co. at the time of her death in 1917.

Their son, ROBERT BRADY MAYFIELD, was born April 1862. On 30 Nov 1886, he married MAGNOLIA (Maggie) DAVIS who was born in July 1866, the daughter of WILSON DAVIS and ESTHER MARANDA BAKER of nearby Blount Co., TN. (Maggie was a twin to her sister Caledonia who married Moses ARMSTRONG.)

Their son, JAMES GORDON MAYFIELD, was born on 7 March 1894, and married (second) DORA LENA O'BRYAN of Lyon Co., KY in Metropolis, IL on 12 January 1920.

I am appreciative of any help. Thanks.

I am seeking information on Mary Belle Cannon of Knox Co. I believe her to be the daughter of John Wallace Cannon b. 1851 in Knox Co and an unknown wife. John's father was Elbert Layfayette Cannon b. 30 Jan 1833 in Straw Plains, Knox Co. and married Eliza Ann Monday on 16 June 1853 in Knox Co.
I believe this Mary to be the wife of William Extine who came to Knoxville from Sylva, NC. I was told "Daddy took her to Sylva to live." I was also told "Momma's people came from Straw Plains." I have only begun my search for this line and could use any clues.
