Stanberry (Stansberry) and Ivins
Gigi Elsmore -- Saturday, 1 July 2000, at 10:39 a.m.

I am looking for any information on my great grandparents, Ambrose Stanberry (Stansberry) and Mary Jane Ivins.

Ambrose was born in North Carolina in 1817. Mary Jane was born in Tennessee in 1825, died June 20, 1884 in Grayson County Tx.

Ambrose and Mary Jane were married August 24, 1841 in Knox Co. Tenn. Their son, Monroe Hutchinson or Hutchinson Monroe was born in 1853 in Tennessee. He died March 5, 1917 in Shawnee, Pottawatome County Oklahoma.

The family moved to Grayson County Texas.

Any information on Stanberry (Stansberry) or Ivins families is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Gigi Elsmore, Salem Oregon

Early RULE family of East TN
Laura Rule Inwards -- Sunday, 2 July 2000, at 2:08 p.m.

My gg-grandfather was Nimrod RULE who was born in East TN (probably Knox County, TN) on August 25, 1829. His parents (possibly Thomas RULE and Catherine?) moved their family to IN when he was just a year old. In a short biography of his life it says that Nimrod RULE was a native of East TN and that "Mr. Rule's ancestors were natives of Tennessee who came to that State at an early day." Does anyone have any information that would help me tie Nimrod RULE to the early RULE family of Knox, TN? Thank you!

Calloway Morris Abernathy Failing Ball's Camp
steffy Rockford -- Monday, 3 July 2000, at 12:00 p.m.

I am researching this family from Ball's Camp Tn 1880s Dr John W Failing was born in NYC to parents of German English and Dutch decent, all ariving in America in the 1600s. His Family migrated to Portland Oregon where they became the founding family and much wealth in Banking railroads and sailing ships. Dr Failing came to Knox Co Tn married Abiah Magnolia Morris and stayed. His daughter Henrietta Morris Failing was college educated, married Phares Winfield Lee, a son of Harriet Satterwhite and George Washington Lee of Monroe Co TN. Henrietta m Faling Lee moved to the Va suburbs of Washington DC, her brother James went to Richmond and brother Henry Abernathy Failing went to Cincinati Ohio.

Abiah Magnolia Morris was a daughter of Nancy Abernathy and Joel Calloway Morris, a tanner of Balls Camp TN. I have little else about them except for Abernathy may have been a minister's daughter and Joel Calloway Morris may have been decended from Daniel Boone thru his daughter Jemima and her husband Flander Calloway

Joyce Franse Minnich -- Monday, 3 July 2000, at 1:34 p.m.

My grandfather, John Isaac Franse, and Daniel Greenlee Franse, were brothers. I have only been able to take the Franse/France line back to William France of Lee Co., Va, but I'll be glad to share any information I have.

There have been several postings in the past on the Beets/Byrd line. Have you read through these? Another descendant of Daniel Greenlee Franse has posted some queries. I've also noticed some Beets/Byrd postings in Anderson Co.

I was wondering if someone could a census lookup for 1880 and 1900 for Knox County. I'm looking for my great-grandfather Andrew Jackson Collins (born 1874). His mother died and was a Graves. He was raised by a Collins family. I'm not sure what county they were living. Andrew had two other brothers Maynard and Herbert. I don't know who the head of the household was then. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it very much.

Thank you,

Phyllis Franse Funk -- Tuesday, 4 July 2000, at 3:30 p.m.

Thanks so very much for the response. I am so eager to learn more. I only learned about my grandfather's birth in Virginia after reading my father's birth certificate. I would like to know which generation came to America; one of my cousins has told me an interesting legend about why whoever that was came over. Apparently, there is also a family "legend" that there may be some Cherokee connection in the family tree, whether it is the Franse, Beet, or Byrd lineage. The Daniel Greenlee Franse homestead is still standing in Heiskell, and I drove by the Bishop Cemetery in Heiskell on a recent trip in May. My grandfather's family is mostly interred in Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville. The information you supplied was wonderful to receive. I hope to hear from you again.

Gregg Watts -- Thursday, 6 July 2000, at 9:19 p.m.

As a follow-up, the 2nd daughter of William & Phebe WATTS, Phebe Jennifer WATTS, married Hugh WHITAKER in Knoxville in Feb 1890. They were still living in Bearden at the time of Phebe senior's death in OH, ca. 1928. As mentioned in the first post, Thomas Charles WATTS returned to the Knoxville area, and married a second time to a woman named Leona WHITTAKER. This was her second marriage also; I believe her maiden name was YORK and that she was born in TN around 1880.

Re: ROBERTS, HOWELL
Michelle Gentry Hagan -- Saturday, 8 July 2000, at 7:40 p.m.

Hello Ellen,

My name is Michelle Gentry Hagan. Franklin Roberts is my 2nd great grandfather. Cordelia Howell was his third wife.

I have a web site with the information that I have regarding Franklin Roberts (4th generation), http://home.hawaii.rr.com/gentryfamily

While at the National Archives last winter I copied about half of his Civil War Pension Application file (the file was very thick). I haven't had a chance to do anything with the file yet. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of Franklin and Cordelia.

I have a copy of Cordelia's marriage application, her will and the information I copied from her grave marker. I would be interested in learning more about Cordelia and her family.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Michelle

Thomas RULE and Catherine HERRON
Laura Rule Inwards -- Monday, 10 July 2000, at 2:56 p.m.

I have just found that my gg-grandfather, Nimrod RULE's parents were Thomas and Catherine RULE. Catherine's maiden name may be HERRON. They both came from East TN before migrating to Putnam Co., IN in 1830. I am guessing that Thomas RULE died in Indiana during the 1840's. It is interesting that there are several new Thomas RULE's born in the 1840's, maybe in his remembrance by other RULE relatives? Anyone with info. on Thomas RULE or his wife Catherine HERRON or HERRON family of Knox Co., East TN?

Family From Knox County
Gina Hill -- Monday, 17 July 2000, at 1:23 a.m.

Hoping someone might be able to help me out with some information on my family. I can't go back very far so I decided to start with my father. Robert Eugene Hill, he was born on Sept. 2.1928 in Knoxville Tenn. The living address on his birth certificate is 512 Cedar St. His parents were George Marshall Hill born abt. 1878 born in Knox County. His occupation was listed as a warehouse fireman. Robert's mother was Serena Noe born abt. 1888 in Harlan County, Ky. It states on the birth cert. that Robert is one of 5 living children with 1 deceased. The only names I have are Polly Hill Wilhite. I believe Wilhite was her married name. Wilbur Hill and Reba Hill but I have no info. on either of them.

I have a copy of Bob's S.S. application and it states on there that at the age of 14 he applied for a number and was working at Knoxville Bowling Center and was living at 824 College St. in Fountain City, Tenn.

Serena Noe passed away from Huntington's Disease and I believe some of her children did also. She was a carrier of the gene that causes it. Robert Hill died of it also.

Would love to have any information on this family if anyone has any they can share.

Thanks,

Gina

Jeffrey Nipper -- Thursday, 27 July 2000, at 7:30 p.m.

Just for kicks I called Lakeshore today to see if I could get another copy of the record since I have lost a few pages. I was told that a lot has changed in the past 10 years and that I would now have to have a court order. They also charge now, which they did not do when I got the original record. Guess change isn't always progress. They did say the executor of the will (from 1918) could get the record. Sorry. Good luck all.

Sandy Fine -- Saturday, 29 July 2000, at 11:16 a.m.

Hi Sammie, I'm looking for a David N. Ward that married Elizabeth Liles on December 28, 1858 in Blount County, TN. Elizabeth is the daughter of my gg-grandfather James Liles of Roane and Knox Counties. I have found Elizabeth Ward on the 1860 Blount County (Friendsville) Census: Ward, Elizabeth T. 26 TN, David W. A. 1 TN, Sarah A.E. 2/12 TN, LYLE, Elizabeth NC (Bo-184) but David her husband was not listed.

I think they may be connected to your Wards' because Elizabeth's sister Mary Margaret married 1) Wiley Beets and 2) Elijah Bishop. Another sister Rachel married Richard Yarnell. Some of these families are buried in Beets, Zion Baptist Church, Bishopville, and Old Gray Cemeteries. James Liles' first wife was Mary "Kimbrell". He had a son named "Peterson". I have not found anything on David and Elizabeth Ward since 1860 and am hoping that somehow they are connected with your family.
