Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Grandview, TN------ Bill & Jane Cox

Does anyone on the Knox Co. list live in Grandview?

If so could you give me some info as to which cemeteries are located there,

please? Actually I'd appreciate any info on the town.

I also saw Grandview listed in other counties.....Greene.

My Great Aunt Robbie (age95) says when she was a young girl that she and her

mother would ride the train for an hour from ROCKWOOD to GRANDVIEW to

visit my gg grandparents Bill & Jane Cox.

Could anyone help me with info on Grandview or the surname Cox from that area.

Thanks,

Terri Pendergrass Fortner

Good morning all...

I am looking for the whereabouts of Tillery Cemetery. It would have be

active in the 1800's probably in Knox county. In particular I am looking for

a Sampson TILLERY and his wife Caty YOAST/YOST.

Thank you.

I have an ancestor named Margaret Roddy b. 28 Sep 1785 in NC who married

David Haston on 5 May 1800 in Knox Co TN. One of my cousins thinks that her

father was Col James Roddy and another thinks he was Col William (Marion ?)

Roddy, James' brother.I have learned that Col. William recieved land in

Blount Co. for his service in the Rev War.I know that there was a Margaret

Roddy born @ the same time as mine whose father was named James but she

married a John Wheeler so my Margaret is another one. If anyone has any

info on these people, please contact me.Thanks, Sherry

Hi, Elizabeth (and everyone). The 1880 Census is on microfilm, as everyone

knows. Believe it or not, Knoxville has a dearth of

researchers-for-hire. You have some options available: the TN State

Library and Archives will do a limited look-up for you, but I don't know

what their deal is (write to reference@mail.state.tn.us). If you have the

patience of Job (no kidding), and you'll send me the reference, I'll see if

1880 is one of the films we have at the LDS FHC in Knoxville next time I'm

there.

I don't mind doing this **on a limited basis** for list members, but I'm

only at the FHC one or two days a month. And, since I'm a volunteer

librarian instead of a patron during those times, I only get to do research

when there's a slow period -- and we have free readers.

That's not meant to sound snitty -- I just don't want to get lots of

requests from people and not be able to fulfill them. I'm happy to give it

a shot when time permits, though.

Subject: [KnoxCoTN] Knox County TNGenWeb updates (long)!

Hi y'all!

We wanted to give you a "sneak peak" of the recent updates/changes on the

Knox County, TNGenWeb site. As always, we appreciate your feedback <smile>!

1. Major re-do of entire site (new subdirectories and pages!) to improve

navigation (caution -- anyone with links from the "old site" need to

re-check them -- most probably have changed!)

http://www.knoxcotn.org . The Research help page also had a major

face-lift - many new entries! http://www.knoxcotn.org/helps/index.html.

2. Added Pinpoint search engine to front page and key index pages

throughout the subdirectory structure. Please take it for a test-drive ---

it's awesome! <smile>. The search engine has indexed all pages housed at

http://www.knoxcotn.org - includes our archived queries (August

96-August 99). Queries submitted since August '99 may be searched using the

WebBBS search engine:

http://www.knoxcotn.org/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?search. Pinpoint

doesn't take the place of the wonderful TNGen search engine -- just

provides Knox County site-specific site search capabilities for the first

time.

**Caution -- Pinpoint will NOT index three-letter surnames (IVY, etc)***

3. Added the Knox Co. newspapers available from TSLA (this version has

links back/forth between "old name" and subsequent names as newspapers

merged, etc). http://www.knoxcotn.org/library/microfilmnews.html

4. Added page with links to tiger maps of all 182 cemetery sites listed in

the GNIS (need help from our team identifying "other names" for some of

those cemeteries -- I know this is just a fraction of the true # of

cemeteries out there ;-). Click on the cemetery name - you'll be connected

to the GNIS - Tiger mapping system. The map will be drawn "on the fly" while

you wait!

http://www.knoxcotn.org/maps/cemeterymaps.html

5. Added additional links to the biographies section

(http://www.knoxcotn.org/biographies/index.html), including an index to

Knoxville residents (full names and birth dates) listed in the "Who's Who of

Tennessee" (1911 edition!)

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1911state/index.html .

6. Added the Knox County portion of the Tennessee State Directory

(1873) -- gives a description/population/location and business persons of

the following towns: ~ ACADEMIA ~ BALL CAMP ~ BULL RUN ~ CAMPBELL’S STATION

~ ~ CONCORD ~ GRAVESTOWN ~ KNOXVILLE ~

~ POWELL’S STATION ~ ROSENBERRY ~ THORN GROVE. Check it out!

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1873state/index.html

7. Two new Bible entries -- thanks to Sandy Jordan and Linda Olson! We'd

love to list your Knox County Bible records - give us a holler!

http://www.knoxcotn.org/bibles/index.html

8. Several new obituary entries -- and more to come!

http://www.knoxcotn.org/knoxobits/index.html

9. Added several references to the Knox County Bibliography page -- mostly

church and family histories:

http://www.knoxcotn.org/bibliography/index.html

10. Speaking of church histories -- please check out another new area.

We've transcribed Early Knox County churches from "Goodpeed's History of

Tennessee" (1887). Includes early church history in the region, naming many

early churches and knox co settlers / preachers.

http://www.knoxcotn.org/churches/knoxchurches1887.htm

11. Last but not least <g> -- please explore Knoxville of yesterday with

the wonderful 1885 Knoxville City Directory -- includes info about streets,

ward boundaries, city & county government, listings of area schools,

churches, incorporated businesses, etc.

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1885%20knox/index.html

- The "Railroads" section is one of my personal favorites -- you could

travel most routes for 3 cents/mile -- so the publishers conveniently placed

mileage charts in the directory! (Knoxville to Bristol, Knoxville to

Louisville, Chattanooga to Memphis via north AL and MS, etc).

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1885%20knox/railroads1885.html

- We also placed a list of 2,093 surnames appearing in the "residential"

section (you have to see to believe!)

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1885%20knox/residentialindex1885.htm

l

- The Business Index (sorted alphabetically by categories which are

cross-linked for "click and go fun". Individual businesses /persons listed

within each category are being added as time allows (the attorneys and the

physicians are in place). Have some fun -- click on a street address within

the listing -- and be transported back in time to the "index to streets and

avenues" section (it's fun!)

http://www.knoxcotn.org/directories/1885%20knox/businessindex1885.html

Have a great weekend!
